John talked to the children about life in the deep ocean and in the Mariana Trench. The children used their imagination to create colourful posters containing all of their ideas. We looked a piece of obsidian (or 'dragon glass'), which was formed when a volcano erupted under the sea. Paul Hearne filmed the children. It was exciting to be part of John's research project.

Year 4 had a fantastic day at the university. participating in three different workshops! One workshop was run by the Debating Society. The children had to debate the pros and cons of wearing school uniform. The second workshop gave the children the experience of singing as part of a gospel choir. The final workshop was based on drama. The children made comic strips and met the villain Mr Hotdog! Thank you to the university for organising such an enjoyable day.

Kathy from Water Aid, June 2017

13 images

Kathy Blacker came into class to tell us about the important work of the charity Water Aid. We are so lucky to have clean water all the time in our houses. In many countries people are not so lucky. Some children have to walk a long way every day to collect water and many people don't have access to clean water at all. Water Aid is aiming to make sure that everyone in the world has clean water by 2030. Kathy told us about Water Aid's work in Madagascar. We all had a turn at picking up the jerry can. It was very heavy!

Mini Boats, June 2017

85 images

We went into the woods to make tiny boats from natural materials. We used twigs, bark, leaves. reeds and bracken. We drew characters to sit in our boats and attached them with clay. We launched them into the River Conder (with Mrs Kim's help and a long handled spade!) Now we are ready to write stories about their adventures on the river!

Children in Madagascar, Irenee and Hardy's visit, May 2017

46 images

As part of our topic work on 'Water' we have been thinking about life in Madagascar, where 50% of children do not have access to clean water. We pretended that we were in Madagascar and Irenee told us about the daily lives of Malagasy children. After waking up we had to collect water and firewood, light a fire, set the water to boil, buy some rice from the stall and pick stones out of the rice. Next, some of us set off to walk to school. Lots of families in Madagascar cannot afford to send their children to school. While some of us had lessons at school, the others had to set to work. The jobs included - looking after the baby, cracking stones to make gravel, washing the clothes, preparing vegetables, helping with the cooking and looking after the cows and ducks. After all of this, it was time to buy breakfast at the stall ... if we had enough money. Benjamin's grandma, Hardy, had cooked us some apple fritters. They were delicious. Afterwards, Irenee taught us some Malagasy games. Thank you for a lovely morning!

Visiting the Gurdwara, May 2017

18 images

We visited the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Preston. Mr. Rye showed us the prayer hall and told us about Sikh beliefs. Sikhs believe that there is only one God and that you should serve other people. Every gurdwara has a langar hall and a kitchen, where food is prepared. Everyone is welcome in a gurdwara and Sikhs cook food for homeless people. We met the priest and had a snack and a drink in the langar hall. We all sat on the floor to show that we are all equal. Thank you to Reverend Cindy for coming with us!

Finding out about Madagascar, May 2017

8 images

Grace and her Mum told us lots of interesting things about life in Madagascar! We had so many questions! We talked about the creatures that live in Madagascar and about how people live there. Life can be hard for children in Madagascar. Lots of children do not have access to clean water and families have to pay to send their children to school or to a doctor. Families live close to each other and help each other out. The people are friendly and always smiling. We loved seeing photos of Grace's family. Thank you Ando!

We will be able to see what is happening to the bulbs at other schools and we will compare our results. Our bulbs are in one of the flower beds in the garden area. Look out for the signpost!

Last week we saw a nest with chicks when we were coming back from swimming. We made our lapwing chicks from two pom poms and used good colours to camouflage them from predators.

Position and direction, March 2017

27 images

We practised turning clockwise and anti clockwise through quarter, half, three quarter and full turns. We blindfolded our partner and directed them around the playground. We had to keep them safe and make sure that there were no collisions! We were very excited to see two buzzards circling over the church!

A Day in Morecambe, March 2017

98 images

It was very windy on The Stone Jetty this morning! That didn't stop us from going right to the end though. We did a traffic survey on Morecambe sea front. There were so many cars that it was hard to make an accurate tally of them! Jake showed us around the Midland Hotel. He told us about the history of the hotel and showed us all the important works of art. We visited the restaurant and climbed the spiral staircase for a view from the top floor balcony. After lunch we walked along the promenade, past the statue of Eric Morecambe, to the Lifeboat Station. Mr. Jackson and the lifeboat crew told us about some rescue missions they have been part of and showed us all of their special equipment. They brought the hovercraft 'Hurley Flyer' for us to see and we all climbed aboard the lifeboat.
