We have been studying the census data from 1885 for Rowton Brook in Quernmore. At that time eleven people lived at the farm, including Mr and Mrs Townson and their six children. We walked to Rowton Brook Farm and met Mr. Derbyshire who lives there now. The layout of the farmhouse is still the same and the building has many of its original features. It was originally built in 1725 so that makes it 295 years old! Thank you to Mr. Derbyshire for letting us visit his house and barn. It was slightly muddy on the way home!!

Kathy Blacker came into class to tell us about the important work of the charity Water Aid. We are so lucky to have clean water all the time in our houses. In many countries people are not so lucky. Some children have to walk a long way every day to collect water and many people don't have access to clean water at all. Water Aid is aiming to make sure that everyone in the world has clean water by 2030. Kathy told us about Water Aid's work in Madagascar. We all had a turn at picking up the jerry can. As part of our topic work on 'Water' we have been thinking about life in Madagascar, where 50% of children do not have access to clean water. We pretended that we were in Madagascar and Irenee told us about the daily lives of Malagasy children. After waking up we had to collect water and firewood, light a fire, set the water to boil, buy some rice from the stall and pick stones out of the rice. Next, some of us set off to walk to school. Lots of families in Madagascar cannot afford to send their children to school. While some of us had lessons at school, the others had to set to work. The jobs included - looking after the baby, cracking stones to make gravel, washing the clothes, preparing vegetables, helping with the cooking and looking after the cows and ducks. After all of this, it was time to buy breakfast at the stall ... if we had enough money. Benjamin's grandma, Hardy, had cooked us some apple fritters. They were delicious. Afterwards, Irenee taught us some Malagasy games. Thank you for a lovely morning!

Visiting the Gurdwara, May 2017 (18 images)
We visited the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Preston. Mr. Rye showed us the prayer hall and told us about Sikh beliefs. Sikhs believe that there is only one God and that you should serve other people. Every gurdwara has a langar hall and a kitchen, where food is prepared. Everyone is welcome in a gurdwara and Sikhs cook food for homeless people. We met the priest and had a snack and a drink in the langar hall. We all sat on the floor to show that we are all equal. Thank you to Reverend Cindy for coming with us!

Grace and her Mum told us lots of interesting things about life in Madagascar! We had so many questions! We talked about the creatures that live in Madagascar and about how people live there. Life can be hard for children in Madagascar. Lots of children do not have access to clean water and families have to pay to send their children to school or to a doctor. Families live close to each other and help each other out. The people are friendly and always smiling. We loved seeing photos of Grace's family. Thank you Ando!

A Day in Morecambe, March 2017 (98 images)
It was very windy on The Stone Jetty this morning! That didn't stop us from going right to the end though. We did a traffic survey on Morecambe sea front. There were so many cars that it was hard to make an accurate tally of them! Jake showed us around the Midland Hotel. He told us about the history of the hotel and showed us all the important works of art. We visited the restaurant and climbed the spiral staircase for a view from the top floor balcony. After lunch we walked along the promenade, past the statue of Eric Morecambe, to the Lifeboat Station. Mr. Jackson and the lifeboat crew told us about some rescue missions they have been part of and showed us all of their special equipment. They brought the hovercraft 'Hurley Flyer' for us to see and we all climbed aboard the lifeboat.

Science Week 2016, Day 1 (10 images)
We had Colour Chaos in Class 3! We tried out chromatography, separating different coloured inks used in felt tips using filter paper. We used red cabbage as a natural indicator and found that acids (lemon juice) turned it red and alkaline (bicarbonate of soda) turned it blue. We carried out a Stroop Test, reading sets of coloured words and timing each other. We decided that we'd rather be a green caterpillar if we lived on the pitch - they were the best camouflaged!

It was hard work getting Dunham Massey ready for Christmas and the servants had lots of jobs to do! There were decorations, cards and pomanders to make. Chocolate bread and biscuits needed baking in the big kitchen. The servants had to be on their best behaviour when they were introduced to Lady Stamford. Out in the grounds the gamekeeper needed help with beating for the hunt and we caught a poacher who was stealing Lord Stamford's rabbits.
